Common Refrigerator Problems and How to Avoid Them

One of the most important appliances in your home is your refrigerator. It keeps everything from food to medicine safe and at the right temperature. Unfortunately, common problems can pop up that leave you without a functioning fridge. While the cost of a new one is high, you can save money when you know how to avoid those problems.

Leaks

A leaking refrigerator is a safety hazard because anyone can slip on the water. This is a big problem found with freezers that have a built-in water dispenser and ice maker. Leaks often form because of a clog in the drain line, but they can also happen when the water supply line freezes. You may also see leaks when the thermostat malfunctions because it keeps the fridge from maintaining a consistent temperature. Defrost the freezer often and keep the drain line clear.

Warm Temperature

The temperature of a working refrigerator should never climb above 41 degrees Fahrenheit. To keep your fridge from getting too hot, always make sure you close the door tightly and that it forms a seal. Try to vacuum on a regular basis, focusing on the coils and vents as well as the space under the fridge. Choose the right spot for your fridge to keep the vents clear, too.

Faulty Door

Refrigerator doors have a rubber seal around their edges. This forms a tight seal when you close the door, which keeps cold air from escaping and keeps the food inside safe. If the door doesn’t close all the way, it can cause the food inside to spoil. You may also notice higher energy bills. If the door pops open on its own or it takes more effort to shut, you’ll need to replace the seal.

Fan Noises

Never overlook any loud noises your refrigerator makes, as those noises are often a sign of a faulty fan. While the evaporator fan circulates cool air around the inside, the condenser fan cools the condenser coils. As one or both fans go out, the refrigerator will produce a humming sound that can become quite loud. Keeping the fans clear can prevent this problem.

Frost Buildup

Though you normally see some frost in your freezer, you don’t want to see ice buildup inside of your fridge. This happens when the inside gets too cold. Keeping an eye on your thermostat can help. Turn the temperature down by a few degrees to see if it helps. You can also defrost the freezer and cut down on how much food you store in your refrigerator.

Common refrigerator problems range from a faulty door to strange noises. With these tips, you can prevent some of these issues. If you find you have a more serious problem and live in Phoenix, AZ, call The Bargain Buster Appliance Sales and Service for refrigerators and freezers repairs.
